Throughout the years, there have been well over two thousand castles built in Scotland, although many are no longer standing today. As they can be found in all parts of the country, it is easy to incorporate a visit to one or many during your trip. From the well-loved Glamis Castle, sitting proudly on its tremendous Angus Estate to the more modest castle ruins you will find along the way, each has its own history and each will take you back in time to tell its romantic story.
Drumscot can arrange a professional guide to accompany you on a particular part of your Tour or throughout, giving you the story behind the story and sharing their in-depth knowledge of Scottish History.
From the Neolithic sites on Orkney dating back some 5000 years to the contemporary architecture of its cities, Scotland has a rich and fascinating history. Discover tales of the villains and heroes who shaped the Nation on a Drumscot custom built, private Tour of Scotland’s Castles.
With over 2,000 castles (in varying states of repair!) you are spoilt for choice when it comes to touring Scotland’s crumbling fortresses, grand palaces and ancient family strongholds.
Whilst Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle are a must for their prominence in Scottish history, Glamis Castle cannot be outdone in the romantic stakes and, off the beaten track, the magnificent Ballindalloch Castle in the heart of Speyside is well worth a visit even if the main purpose of your visit to the area is the World famous Whisky Trail. For a more comprehensive list of our favourite castles (and what makes them our favourites), please see our ‘Top 10 Scottish Castles’ article for more details.
With so many, it might seem surprising that Scotland has only one dedicated ‘Castle Trail’, but it is a bit of a belter and deserves a special mention.
Taking in 17 of Aberdeenshire’s most famous castles, from the ruins of Drumnottar to the magnificence of Her Majesty the Queen’s official Scottish residence at Balmoral, Scotland’s official Castle Trail has something to please everyone. We at Drumscot of course have our favourites, but we certainly won’t let personal bias get in the way of making sure you see the very best that this part of Scotland has to offer.
Why not immerse yourself in history with a stay at a Castle Hotel. Our favourite for an authentic experience is the spectacular Glengorm Castle located on the Isle of Mull with its breath taking views. You can choose to book 4 star accommodation in the castle itself or opt for one of the self-catering cottages located beyond the castle grounds.
Whilst on the beautiful Isle of Mull, make sure to take advantage of the guided walks that are available around the coast, as well as planning a visit to the capital, Tobermory, where you can find delightful brightly coloured shops and restaurants, as well as the island’s only single malt Scotch Whisky Distillery, the Tobermory Distillery.
We at DrumScot would be delighted to create a customised tour of your favourite Scottish Castles. If you don’t know which ones these are yet, please get in contact and let us know your requirements: do you want to see ancient stone ruins, something with a bit of romance, or is it grand historical palaces that you are taken with?
We can also use our local knowledge to suggest other types of activities or places you might want to include in your tour. For those amongst us engrossed in history, you may be interested in our ancient battle sites and Roman frontiers. Anyone looking to build up a sweat might like to bag a Munro or cycle through our ‘Celtic rainforests’. (Scotland is also one of the world’s top mountain biking destinations for those feeling adventurous…) For the foodies, perhaps you’d like to appraise the local single malt whisky, or sample some of the quality produce that Scotland has to offer. You might even want to catch your own, with a day’s guided Salmon Fishing on the River Tay.
All this and more can be arranged for you: simply let us know your interests and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes. Please contact us if you would like us to create you a custom built private Tour based on our local knowledge and ability to uncover those hidden gems which make our Tours unique.
If you are interested in a private tour of Scotland taking in one or more of these unique Scottish castles, Drumscot would be delighted to prepare a sample itinerary for your consideration. In the first instance please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
